The secret to maintaining a beautiful deck

Failing to properly maintain a deck can lead to expensive damage, rot & fading. Whether you own Castle Rock real estate, or Glen Allen real estate, if you have a deck, there are a few things you can do to prolong the life. Stains can become permanent on composite decking if not treated right away.

• Clean the decking thoroughly at least once a year. To save time, use a pressure washer instead of a scrub brush & bucket of soapy water. When power washing, don’t use too strong a setting. Too much pressure could cause damage to the wood & do more harm than good. A bucket of soapy water & brush is your best bet when it comes to cleaning cracks & spaces on the deck.
• Stay away from cleaners that contain bleach. Bleach will fade the wood & can also reduce effectiveness of sealants.
• Don’t forget to secure all railings. This should go without saying, but they can be a safety hazard that can cost you thousands in medical bills, too.
• Be sure that you clean between the deck boards because this is where many leaf particles and other matter accumulate. You could also discover mold & fungus here. Clean between every board.
• Be sure to seal deck each and every year. Re-seal your deck whenever water no longer beads. Wood naturally expands & contracts when it gets wet, so keeping that moisture out is extremely important.
• Don’t use nails to secure the deck. Deck screws work much better. Most deck boards are screwed down, although some cheaper and older decks have nails, which will need to be hammered down every year. With time, decking will tend to loosen, split & splinter & might need replacement. Loose boards should be secured for safety reasons as well.
• Keep deck furniture in storage during winter months. This won’t be a problem with plastic furniture, but keep a close eye on it if you have metal tables & chairs.
• Immediately sweep any leaves and other debris from the decking to keep it clean and keep fungus or mold from growing and rot from occurring. A dry deck is a healthy deck.
