Historical Notes On The 1950s Clothing Styles: How War, Peace And The Economy Influenced 1950s Fashion

Irrespective of our age, the majority of us can remember the exclusive 1950s clothing styles, traditionally from popular Tv shows, for example ‘I Love Lucy’, ‘Leave it to Beaver’ and ‘Lassie. The principal unique of this decade of fashion was the wide, beneath the knee skirts and Prom dresses, made up of yards and yards of material not seen on the fashion picture since Victorian times. So much fabric! Adornments of lace along with other big clippings to border and sleeves were also common enhancements. These types of clothing were the peak of fashion and held up in reputation for a total decade.

Have you ever wondered why and how fashion designers come up with an ever modifying choice of clothing designs that differ through the year and season with respect to color and detailing? The fundamental designs provide ladies with a brand new take on their fashion appearance, though color and detailing serve to tag your clothing as trendy and up to date or aged and fashion-unconscious. Ladies pay the closest focus on the whims and trends put together by fashion designers. Men do note what their women wear, putting us pretty much at the mercy for this fashion industry.

Even today, the 1950s clothing styles remain to be found, quick selling items in the retro and vintage clothing shops an internet-based auction sites such as eBay. So why did the 50s fashion designs survive such a long time?

While in the Great Depression years, fashion designers could ill afford the voluminous quantities of fabric  expected for that big, moving skirts and expensive detailing – beads, slim satin trims and slim lines had been popular and low-priced. Throughout World War II, rationing extended even into clothes. There was a successful blackmarket for silk tights. Subsequent World War II, after more than 2 decades of such svelte, but economical fashions, women were greater than ready for something new and designers were happy to accommodate their wishes. In the post World War II era, 50s fashions walked from the slimmer cuts, necessitated by rationing of several products, which includes fabrics. Costume jewelry fit into properly with the more casual 50s styling, not costing an arm and a leg, yet adding an enjoyable, brilliant highlight to almost any costume.

Wide skirts and puffy sleeves developed a reappearance to an eager viewers of consumers. The four or five yards of fabric necessary for the 1950s clothing styles took over as the tag on the well dressed lady, no more limited to the minimalism of the designs of the 1930s and 1940s. Bodices were embellished with pleating, adornments and laces, while skirts sported cute appliques – remember the ‘Poodle’ skirt? Coats and knit tops underwent the identical transformation, using the so-called car coat and Perry Como sweaters all the rage.

Nevertheless, the 1950s clothing style did finally fade into fashion record, providing approach to the revolutionary 60s trends – knee-high shoes or boots, midi-length skirts and Prom dress, embroidered peasant tops and tassle leather and suede coats. After all, creative designers do need to have us update our wardrobes – or else, where would they be?
