Could this child have autism?

She is 5 years old. Her first language is not English so she is having difficulty at school. She understands more English than she can speak. In fact she reads books in English from cover to cover by herself, but she refuses to speak in English. She doesn’t do her school work, doesn’t respect authority, but she reads books at home by herself, on topics that interest her. She didn’t start talking late when she was younger, she started speaking (in her first language) at a normal age. She spends hours by herself playing, and she sometimes plays with small objects or trinkets like beads or buttons, for long periods of time. She doesn’t socialize with other children except for her sibling, is very shy and tries to avoid guests whenever they come over. She has some sensory issues and is sensitive to some sounds and textures, she even dislikes being hugged or touched. She is also very stubborn and prone to tantrums and grudges.

My eleven year old sister has autism. She has tantrums everyday, she dislikes people touching her. She is very sensitive when people touch her hair and if the television is very loud. A child with autism is usually very prone to find it interesting to do and play with things other children don’t have fun with at all.
You say that this young girl is very good at reading in fact she is advanced in reading and many autistic children have such a gift to be able to focus and learn sometimes even better that a typical child. Although many children can have behavior problems.
What I recommend is to have the guardian or parents of the little girl ask the school to have the child evaluated as soon as possible. The longer you wait the harder things will get with the child’s education and behavior.
You send a letter to the school requesting you’re child to get evaluated. You have to state the reasons why you are requesting this evaluation. After the letter is sent to the school, the school has fifteen days to respond if the don’t you send another letter. If after that they still deny you’re child an evaluation or don’t respond you arrange a Due Process.

If you have any questions just send me an email and I’ll try to help out.
